  • What type of processes can be improved with Citizen Development?
Almost anything! We have helped many organisations apply a Citizen Development approach to develop tools for many different functions. Examples include; Programme Management, Project Management, Asset Management, Health & Safety, Resource Management, Shipping & Logistics, Government, Sustainability, HR, CRM, Manufacturing Management, Document Management.
  • Who can become a Citizen Developer?
Anyone within your organisation with a good understanding of your processes and business needs can become a Citizen Developer. With proper training and the right tools, non-technical employees can build and manage apps that support the business. In our experience people who are good at developing spreadsheets into tools for the business often make great citizen developers . . . it's the same mindset and aptitude but empowered with a different set of tools.
  • How do we start building a Citizen Development ecosystem?
To begin, we help you identify and train in-house Citizen Developers, set up the necessary tools and platforms, and establish governance structures to ensure smooth, scalable development processes.
  • What are the costs involved?
Like most things, it depends! Costs are typically built up of the following elements: Establishment labour effort. This is based on the time required to help a client ‘get setup’. For some clients this may be mostly identifying, training and supporting their own Citizen Developers but for others it may be more direct or hands on effort to help set up a specific use case / app and then train and hand this over to in-house Citizen Developers to take forward. Support effort. It's usually a good idea to have a support contract so that in-house Citizen Developers can easily reach out for support. This support can be structured in a few different ways. Platform licensing costs. In some instances clients may purchase the licences for the low code / no code development platform directly from Sand Digital. Usually this is because Sand Digital can offer a better than list price for these licences.
  • What kind of support does Sand Digital provide?
We offer a range of support, including app creation, technical training, platform setup, and governance structures. Our team is also available for ongoing technical support, app health checks, and app development services. We can also provide support with platform / tool selection and licensing.
  • What industries and organisations does Sand Digital have experience with?
We have experience with a large variety of industry sectors including; Food & Beverage, Mining & Metals, Manufacturing, FMCG,Government. We have experience helping a variety of organisation types including; large multinationals, state owned enterprises, small to medium enterprises, charities & not for profit, startups.
  • What if we get stuck or need help with an app?
We offer varying levels of ongoing support, from technical assistance to app development updates. We can be engaged to support just the ‘complex’ elements of an app build and then leave the rest to you. Our team can also conduct regular health checks to ensure your apps continue to run efficiently over time.
  • Who owns the App and the IP?
You do. Sand Digital never owns the apps developed for a client or the IP that is contained in them. Even when Sand Digital helps to directly develop an app for a client we are turning their expertise (IP) on how a process should run into a useful digital form. We strongly believe that organisations need to own their own digital future which means owning the capability to develop their own IP into digital tools and processes.
  • What kind of tools are used in Citizen Development?
Citizen Developers typically use low-code or no-code platforms (like Quickbase), which allow them to build apps without needing extensive coding skills. These platforms make app creation accessible and efficient.
  • What role does Quickbase play in Citizen Development?
Quickbase simplifies app development and provides the flexibility needed to build and manage apps in-house. As a registered partner of Quickbase, we offer licences for this low-code platform, which is a powerful tool for Citizen Developers. However note that Sand utilises a variety of low-code solutions and Quickbase is not always the right choice.
  • Is Industry 4.0 and SIRI only for industrial / manufacturing businesses?
No, Industry 4.0 does not only matter to industrial businesses; its impact is far-reaching and extends across multiple sectors, influencing industries beyond manufacturing. While the term "Industry 4.0" originated from industrial manufacturing and describes the integration of digital technologies like IoT (Internet of Things), AI, big data, and automation into production processes, its principles apply to many other fields including Logistics, Healthcare, Agriculture (smart farming), Energy, Construction, and the Public Sector.
  • Who can conduct a SIRI assessment?
Only a Certified SIRI Assessor (CSA) can conduct a SIRI assessment. Andrew from Sand Digital is certified for these assessments. To have an assessment funded through Callaghans Innovations ‘Smart Factory Assessments’ programme requires the assessment organisation to be an approved provider by Callaghan. Sand Digital is an approved provider to this programme.
  • How much does an official SIRI assessment cost?
There is no standard fixed price for SIRI assessments in New Zealand however prices are typically $10k - $15k depending on organisational complexity and location. Callaghan Innovation has a programme called ‘Smart Factory Assessments’ that uses SIRI assessments and in most cases makes these free for SMEs (that meet certain eligibility requirements). It’s still an official SIRI assessment and you can still choose Sand Digital (as an approved programme provider) to complete your assessment through this programme. Please get in touch and we can help with any queries and support your application process.
  • Is there funding available for SIRI assessments?
YES! • What are the differences between SIRI assessment providers? Why should I choose Sand Digital?
When choosing your assessor it's important to understand the differences and similarities between providers which are as follows; All assessors must have the same qualification, follow the same assessment structure and utilise the same tools as follows; All SIRI assessors must be Certified SIRI Assessors which means they have met the entry criteria and completed the training set by INCIT (who administer SIRI globally). All SIRI assessments must follow the same basic structure and use the same assessment toolset and benchmarking data as defined by INCIT. All SIRI assessments must produce the same report template and structure which is set by INCIT (although specific content is written by the assessor). All assessors who are providing an assessment under (paid by) Callaghans Smart Factory Assessment programme must be approved providers to the programme (Sand Digital is an approved provider). Assessments under this programme must abide by the agreement to Callaghan including completing the additional (non SIRI) questions on sustainability. Differences primarily come down to the experience and capabilities of the assessor; Assessor expertise in Industry4. Andrew has been at the forefront of Industry4 for many years having presented on the topic at EMEX, Tech Week and other speaking engagements both in New Zealand and overseas. He was also selected to lead projects in Callaghan Innovation’s ‘Industry 4.0 Demonstration Network’. Assessor industry experience. Assessors with relevant and broad experience can bring better context and relevant examples which improves the participant experience and assessment outcomes. Andrew has over 20 years completing data and digitally led projects for Industrial clients across many segments. His background as a controls engineer allows him to understand critical details and provide specific advice on opportunities. Assessor facilitation experience. The assessor's facilitation experience helps improve the enjoyment and drives the value of the assessment. Most of the opportunities for improvement identified in the assessment process come from the assessment group and the assessors role is to guide this discussion with structure, context and improved understanding of Industry4 concepts. Andrew has a proven talent for facilitating these discussions to identify and cultivate these opportunities for growth. Reports, recommendations and next steps. The assessor's ability to ‘pull together’ the assessment outcomes and provide clear ‘next step’ recommendations as part of the assessment report is critical. Andrew's strong technical and business acumen allow him to quickly grasp the existing business processes and the opportunities identified to make clear recommendations on next steps.

  • What about our IP, data security and privacy?
The short answer is that high trust is required to get the most out of the SIRI assessment process and there are legal agreements that are always put in place before an assessment to support this trust. Contact us for more information on this area.
